The entry is to the right of the portico (central wing of the palace).

The platform can be reached via stairs, or an elevator followed by stairs (48 steps). The way up is accompanied by numerous picture panels illustrating the history of the Braunschweig Palace and the quadriga.

Braunschweig´s Quadriga

Braunschweig´s quadriga is 9.5 meters long, 7.5 meters wide, and 9.2 meters high, making it the largest quadriga in Europe with only one charioteer. Therefore, it is also larger than the more famous quadriga on Berlin’s “Brandenburger Tor”. The group of figures, made of welded silicon bronze plates with an internal stainless-steel frame, weighs an impressive 25.8 tons! It was cast and assembled by the DBA Emil Kosicki bronze foundry in Komorniki near Poznan, Poland, between spring 2006 and fall 2008.

Visitors to the quadriga platform are treated to a breathtaking view over Braunschweig. Several information boards along the handrail point out the location of other sights of the city and show you from where our local “mountain” ranges, the Elm and the Harz, can best be seen. The figures of the quadriga group depict the city goddess Brunonia and her team of horses.

Further Information

In his designs for the Palace for Duke Wilhelm, architect Carl Theodor Ottmer had already envisioned a quadriga as a symbolic crowning glory in 1831 – 1833. However, due to costs, it was only finished in 1863, as a belated present for Duke Wilhelm’s silver jubilee. The Dresden sculptor Ernst Rietschel designed the 1:3 model between 1856 and 1861.

This first quadriga was already destroyed two years later due to a fire in the palace. This led to the creation of a second (slightly smaller) group of figures, which fell victim to metal thieves after the Second World War. The quadriga based on the 1:3 model by Rietschel was reconstructed alongside the palace in 2008.
